August Bloom Day — Last of the Lilies

Tomorrow is bloom day. I missed last month’s, though there were some interesting plants in bloom: Monardella villosa, Monardella micrantha, Calylophus hartegii, Lilium regale, Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria,’ one or two others that we don’t always have blooming. This month has fewer things of interest. The geraniums are blooming (‘Bill Wallis’ reblooming, ‘Mavis Simpson’ hanging on since June), the last of our lilies , an ornamental oregano that brings large numbers of honey bees into the garden for the only time of the year, and a lot of the more ever-blooming plants like the orange Canna, the Blessed Calendulas, the Galvezias which seem to always have flowers but rarely in significant quantities.

Overall, not much else is worth photographing at the moment. Partly because August is the tail end of our bloom season, but mostly because we just began several projects and the garden is in that state of chaos that happens before everything begins to get put back together again. Bamboo leaves are strewn everywhere. Though actually I finished the first of the projects this weekend, and just need to tidy it up and then it will be bloggable. We’ve had this garden exactly five years now, and it is getting some upgrades that should make us want to stay here another five.

That Lobelia is simply beautiful … great colour. Loved the Black Beauty Lily too. It sounds like there’s a whole lot of happenings going on in your garden right now. I’ll be back to see the photos when it’s done!

Thanks, Bernieh, Gayle, Sage Butterfly, and Townmouse. It’s nice to get a few photos when there is so much transitional mess in the rest of the garden. Glad you all enjoyed them.

Nice selection for August. I have the oenothera too, but I’ve been less accommodating to letting it bloom and start up another generation. Good luck with the project. I’m sure there’ll be cool pics.

@Tom The Calendula decided on its own that it should combine with the Calandrinia. I’ve liked seeing how the orange will look with different flowers.
@James I know what you mean about the oenothera. It makes me nervous sometimes, but so far has behaved itself. It’s one of those plants that can go horribly wrong.

Just lovely…I have ‘Black Beauty’ as well and it such a stunner…and I love that it blooms later than most lilies, really extending the season. Is that Pennisetum ‘Karley Rose’?

Yeah, it’s definitely a bonus that Black Beauty goes after all the others.
You might be right about the Pennisetum. We think it is a P. orientale variety, possibly ‘Karley Rose’ but we don’t remember. It’s not very big, doesn’t reseed, doesn’t need irrigation, doesn’t look very good in the winter, blooms great every year with a pinkish cast. We’ve had three of them for five years, really happy with them.

I think I have that Black Beauty lily. I was appalled the first time it bloomed, but this year I started warming up to it.
