Gothenburg Botanic Garden

In Sweden I also visited the Gothenburg Botanic Garden. Another great garden, it’s the best thing in Gothenburg, and one of the best botanic gardens in Europe. It has a number of nice sections, most are naturalistic, it’s rocky and hilly, and does a great job incorporating the plants with the terrain.

The Rock Garden is probably the most famous section of the garden, or at least it was the one I’d heard about ahead of time. It’s nicely sited and has a fun tunnel and a lovely waterfall. The plants seemed ordinary, but I’m from California, maybe the plants are rare in Sweden or I was overlooking the special ones.

Dead tree art peace doubling as carpenter bee habitat.

I actually liked the Herb Garden most of all. It loosely follows the traditional layout of a mediterranean garden but with a more contemporary vibe. There is a water feature in the center of a classic quincux layout, but the water feature is set in the ground instead of a raised pool or urn, the paving is informal, and the beds are edged naturalistically, no boxwood or knot garden. I liked it better than any of the herb gardens I’ve seen in the actual mediterranean.

They call this area the Perennial Garden. Summer bloomers with coordinated colors.

I don’t remember what the gown was about. A bit of a ghostly vibe.

And some cheerful Black Eyed Susans on my way out. That plant loves Sweden.
