Lawn to Garden, Front and Backyard

Photos of another lawn conversion. Olive trees, Lavender, Grevillea, Manzanita, Westringia, succulents.

The photo above is in the fourth year.

In the front we used cardboard and planted right away but in the back we covered the lawn temporarily with cloth to smother all of the weeds. I don’t remember exactly, but I think there was bermuda grass and the type of tap-rooted weeds that can grow through cardboard. After a year and a half we raked the mulch out of the way onto a tarp, removed the cloth, pulled all the surviving weeds, and then did the usual process of cardboard, compost, plants, driplines, mulch.

The photo above is the first season. We put in a couple of veggie beds alongside the meadow. The planting has fruit trees too, but they’re still young.

This is the second year, plants starting to grow in. Festuca mairei, Perovskia, Trachelium, Eryngium.

The newest addition is a sauna. I bet it’s pretty nice to sit in the sauna looking out over the veggie garden and meadow, watching the garden grow.
